At a news conference on Wednesday, Richard Mourdock, Indiana state treasurer and Republican candidate for the Senate, defended comments he made at a debate on Tuesday night. When responding to a question about whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest, Mourdock said that when a pregnancy results from rape it's what "God intended to happen." On Wednesday Mourdock said he was "misunderstood" after critics said his comment implied that God intends for rape to happen. Mourdock clarified that while he believes abortion is wrong without exception, he "abhors any kind of sexual violence," saying that if anyone "came away with any impression other than that I truly regret it, I apologize."
